The Rotary group Honouring Indigenous Peoples (HIP) is asking for help with a project to distribute hockey equipment and concussion awareness education to Northern communities.

As you may be aware, sports related concussions have serious consequences. As sports equipment becomes more available, and youth participation increases, awareness and education is critical to get in front of injuries.

The HIP group is working to provide recreational opportunities by supplying hockey equipment - and is providing awareness and education regarding concussion injuries.

Help is needed to fund shipment of the equipment and the educational materials. If you, or your club, can help with this project, please read more and donate. Details and contact information can be found in the 'Read More' link.

The Rotary project called Honouring Indigenous Peoples is supported by many Rotary Districts in Southern Ontario including 6330. More information about HIP can be found on their website by following this link.

We are happy to let everyone know we have partnered with Steve Podborski, former Olympic skier and currently CEO of Parachute Canada, to distribute copies of their “Concussion Guideline for Parents & Caregivers” along with GTA Hockey collection that is supported by numerous southern Ontario Rotary clubs and organized by Susan Hicks & Gerald Lue of the Rotary Club of Etobicoke.

As you are well aware, sports related concussions have serious consequences. As sports equipment becomes more available, and youth participation increases, awareness and education is critical to get in front of injuries. We will be exploring other injury awareness education opportunities and will keep you in the loop as they develop.

Currently we are in desperate need of funding to move 61 pallets of hockey gear with the concussion guides as follows:

4 Pallets of Hockey Gear + 2 Boxes of Guides - Bearskin Lake
4 Pallet of Hockey Gear + 2 Boxes of Guides - Nibinamik
8 pallets of Hockey Gear + 2 Boxes of Guides - Webequie
10 Boxes of Guides – Wasaya Air Attention Sharon Smith-Baxter to be distributed to ownership community
1 pallet of Hockey Gear + 2 Boxes of Guides - Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School
23 pallets of Hockey Gear + 20 Boxes of Guides - Manitoba Aboriginal Sport & Recreation Council
11 pallets of Hockey Gear + 5 Boxes of Guides - Rankin Inlet
10 pallets of Hockey Gear + 2 Boxes of Guides – Attawapiskat
5 Boxes of Guides – Attention Grand Chief Solomon to distribute

As you are more than aware of, transportation to fly-in communities is limited and costly. A single pallet of merchandise can require multiple trucking and airline or rail vendors. While we are grateful to these transportation companies for providing services at a discounted price, covering costs and supporting these companies for sustainability is also very important. These companies play a critical role in ensuring isolated communities receive needed supplies. If any of these transportation companies disappear, the situation will get a whole lot worse for the people in these communities. HIP is invested in supporting these transportation companies and working with them to overcome these challenges.

Costs for the full 61 pallets, including ground transportation and airlines, has yet to be finalized however, this project is expected to cost between $25,000 and $40,000 for end-to-end transportation.

Any amount donated will be gratefully received and thankfully applied.  (Cheques can be mailed ATTENTION Julie Dunaiskis c/o HIP, 100 Simcoe St., Suite 110, Toronto, ON   M5H 3G2).

With Warm Regards,
