District Governor Diane’s Message – September 2016

It has been an amazing journey visiting the Clubs in our District. Bill and I have been made to feel so welcome and enjoyed great fellowship everywhere that we have gone. Each Club is so proud of what they do and each Rotarian in our District should be commended for their commitment.

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month and one of Rotary’s Areas of Focus. In our world, 67 million children have no access to education and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. As Rotarians we support educational projects that provide technology, teacher training, vocational training teams, student meal programs and low-cost textbooks to communities. Our goal is to strength the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education and increase adult literacy.

What can we do in District 6330? This is a great month to have a speaker on Literacy. Take a look at ways that your Club members can get involved in a literacy project in your community or around the world. Rotarians provide books to children, read to seniors, build lending libraries, support English as a second language programs and provide one on one support to open the world of literacy to a diverse group of people. Watch for our literacy awards outline for your Club which will have several levels of achievement this upcoming year.

Thank-you all for what you do to make a difference in our communities and around the world. We are constantly demonstrating that we are in the “People business” by “Serving Humanity” and supporting Basic Education and Literacy Programs.
