District Governor Erin’s Message

August is Membership Month!

I’m not sure how it happened, but WELCOME TO AUGUST! With August being Membership Month, I
wanted to share with you how I became a member of Rotary.

In 2011, I was a part of the Group Study Exchange (GSE) team that went to Kumamoto and Oita, Japan. It was an incredible experience that I don’t even think I could put into words (as I was trying to select a photo to accompany this message, I struggled to pick just one)! My sponsoring club for GSE was Greater Flint Sunrise and, upon my return, I was asked if I wanted to become a member. How could I pass that up?!

The ten years following my GSE experience have been full of ups and downs—both personally and professionally. People would ask me all the time, “why do you continue to stay in Rotary with everything you have going on?” My response each time was, “the people.” I remain in contact with those I experienced GSE with, the people in my club are wonderful and welcoming, and everyone I’ve met in our District, Zone, and Internationally is so kind and passionate about doing good in the world.

In my opinion, our membership is based on people and relationships. This is very fitting as RI President Shekhar has initiated a program called Each One, Bring One. He is asking each of us to commit to welcoming one new person into Rotary or Rotaract between now and June 30, 2022. I am taking this a step further…

I am asking each of you to bring a visitor to a Rotary meeting and/or event to experience Rotary. As a District, we will be recognizing each person who contributes to this. Should a visitor become a Rotarian, the sponsoring Rotarian will receive an “Each One, Bring One” pin (this pin can be added to if the sponsoring Rotarian brings more than one new member). This might also be a good chance to explore how your club can remove barriers to membership!

A great opportunity to bring a visitor would be our first Noon Zoom for the year on Monday, August 16th! Our speaker is Neil Dunsmore who is a Rotarian and a Toastmaster who walked 531 kilometers to raise
awareness for mental illness. Look for the Noon Zoom invitation email soon!

Which bring me to the last thing I wanted to share for August. I am so excited to continue IPDG David’s
Noon Zooms this year. You will see quite a bit of overlap and transition between IPDG David and me.
We are sharing the details of our plan in this Video Message.

I wish each of you a very happy, healthy month!

Yours in service,

Erin Shankie
